Grandma was right

On my morning walk after my training session today I had the opportunity to recollect to my childhood. Each morning my grandma would rise with the sun (sometimes before) and she would be intentional about going on a walk. We lived in the country so it was on gravel roads with minimal traffic. At the time I thought it was a little goofy to see her walking and rotating her arms in big circles. She "knew" about lymph drainage and MAP10 recovery sessions 30 years ago!

When I asked her one time what she thought about during her walks, she was very precise in her response. She used that time to pray and be thankful for the surroundings that she was able to witness. From the smells of the crops maturing to the sounds of the pheasants crowing, the variety of natural surroundings established routine and consistency in her day. This time was hers to create balance and structure for the remainder of the day.

After returning from her walk, she would prepare breakfast for her and my grandpa. During the summers, we would do our work on the farm beginning around 6:30 a.m. By 8:00 a.m. we would have the crops irrigated and it was breakfast time. Grandpa would go inside and sit with my grandma, they would talk while they were eating their meal and there were no iPads or phones. They simply enjoyed their time together...every morning!

The previous generation is sometimes referred to as the "Greatest Generation". We can learn a lot from them if we simply listen and slow down.

Over the course of the next few weeks, our coaching staff will be creating posts that outline great tips and useful information that we practice daily. We want to be the change in a complicated fitness industry where sexiness and sizzle get all of the attention and publicity. We want to be a catalyst for change and education.

As a challenge this weekend, put down your phone/tablet, turn off the TV or computer, and simply enjoy the time and the surroundings that you have been neglecting or never noticed. Get out in nature and experience the awesome landscape that is there for your enjoyment!
